Communication is crucial to effective leadership. This is not simply talking or conversing. Effective communication is shared. It’s a two way process that involves imparting knowledge and taking in knowledge. You have to be able to know how to listen effectively before you can communicate and transfer knowledge. It sounds easy but I assure you it takes a lot of effort to truly listen to understand because most of the time we already think of our responses to the other person’s remarks even if they haven’t finished what they want to say and since we are preoccupied with our own thoughts we will not be able to fully understand what it is they are trying to say. It’s not just verbal communication you should concentrate in to. Communication with your project teams takes different forms and each one is essential. Reports, memos presentation documents and other forms of written communication is important to disseminate information efficiently
Problem Solving and Decision making
As project manager you are expected to make sound decisions based on skillful interpretation of available information. You have to be firm in its implementation. Things you have learned based on experience will surely help in creating a solution to challenges that your project must face.
Build teamwork
As a leader you are looked up to by your team. The ability to influence them to do what you want for the project’s success is something you need to develop by earning their trust and by placing mutual respect for each other on the table. If you lead by example, your team will not have a hard time adapting to what you want them to do. Foster team spirit through team building and team meetings. Every once in a while set aside some time for social get together to interact with each other outside of you working environment.
Organizational skills
Taking charge of a project team can bring chaos especially if you do not know how to keep track of things. As project manager you are the over seer of everything that happens to your project and in order to keep track you need to be able to develop a system. Several project management software that can help you like project tracking software or project scheduling software to aid in keeping things organized are widely available.
